That Pt Varas is a touristy town is not so surprising. The view is great, looking off across Lago Llanquihue towards the volcanos Osorno and Calbuco. There are a lot of activities to be done there as well, for those inclined for outdoor fun. Also, we found that while it is a little bit of a tourist town, it pales in comparison to the mighty trap that is Pucon.
