Hungary had a checkered history during the 20th century. For both world wars, it found itself on the losing side. For WWII, the Allies had no interest in it prior to the war, and as living under Soviet rule seemed unbearable, Hungary chose the Nazis, a decision that haunted them, and resulted in the near destruction of Budapest.
