One aspect that I like about the desert is the trees. Since there is such a short period of growth every year, the trees are blunted in their size. They are twisted and curved by their environment, by winds and head and sun. They have a real sense of age, a kind of natural bonsai. I found pine that looked dead, the wood was gray and dry, no bark present, but yet there were areas at the ends of branches with new growth, like life coming from driftwood.
