The Rockies are unique at least in the US for their rawness. They aren't enveloped in trees and shrubbage like other ranges, they aren't smoothed by eons of erosion, they aren't subdued by development. They are jutting and bare and rocky and powerful, and they demand a lot of respect. You don't just go trotting up most of them, you tread lightly and carefully up their slopes.
